La Storia al femminile: autrici dimenticate nella storiografia greca

Abstract

In questa tesi intitolata “La Storia al femminile: autrici dimenticate nella storiografia greca” si cerca di trovare una risposta e una motivazione all’ingiustificata e, tuttavia, ben radicata convinzione di autori antichi e di critici moderni che non vi furono autrici che si cimentarono nel genere storiografico nella tradizione letteraria antica in lingua greca prima della principessa Anna Comnena, considerata, infatti, la prima storica della letteratura greca. Infatti, Il fatto che non ci siano pervenute integralmente opere storiografiche scritte da donne, non è in sé una prova che esse non fossero esistite. Perciò, attraverso l’analisi, la traduzione e lo studio dei frammenti attribuiti a tre autrici dimenticate dalla tradizione si è tentato di dimostrare che in realtà esistettero storiche ben prima di Anna Comnena. Si tratta di nomi e di frammenti giunti a noi per tradizione indiretta e delle quali le fonti hanno sistematicamente messo in dubbio l’attribuzione e l’autenticità. Scopo di questa tesi è dunque restituire la dignità e il valore che la tradizione ha tolto a queste storiche e di trarle fuori dal cono d’ombra che circonda i loro nomi, dando loro un volto, per quanto possibile. Di ognuna si cercherà di ricostruire un profilo storico a partire dall’analisi delle testimonianze sulle autrici stesse e dai frammenti delle loro opere con il fine di stabilire se effettivamente si possa considerare Anna Comnena la prima storica e storiografa della letteratura greca o se questo titolo possa essere assegnato ad altre donne, che vissero prima e il cui nome è andato dimenticato.

In this thesis, entitled “Women’s History: forgotten authors in Greek historiography”, an attempt is made to find both an explanation and a justification for the unfounded yet deeply rooted belief, shared by ancient writers and modern critics alike, that no women engaged in the historiographical genre within the ancient Greek literary tradition prior to Princess Anna Comnena—who is, in fact, considered the first female historian of Greek literature. The fact that no complete historiographical works written by women have survived to the present day is not, in itself, proof that such works never existed. Therefore, through the analysis, translation, and study of the fragments attributed to three female authors forgotten by tradition, this research seeks to demonstrate that women historians did, in fact, exist long before Anna Comnena. These are names and fragments that have come down to us only through indirect transmission, and whose attribution and authenticity have been systematically questioned by the sources.

The aim of this thesis is thus to restore the dignity and value that tradition has denied these women historians and to bring them out of the shadow that has long obscured their names, giving them, as far as possible, a voice and an identity. For each of them, an attempt will be made to reconstruct a historical profile based on the analysis of the testimonies concerning the authors themselves and the fragments of their works, with the goal of determining whether Anna Comnena can indeed be regarded as the first female historian and historiographer of Greek literature, or whether this title should rather be attributed to other women who lived earlier and whose names have since been forgotten.
