La polizia marittima veneziana tra fine sedicesimo e diciassettesimo secolo

Abstract

L’intento di questa tesi è analizzare la struttura e il ruolo della polizia marittima della Repubblica di Venezia nei secoli XVII e XVIII, in un contesto di declino politico ed economico. L’indagine si focalizza sul funzionamento delle istituzioni preposte al controllo delle acque, sulla repressione del contrabbando, sulla sicurezza dei traffici marittimi e sulla crisi della sovranità veneziana nel Mediterraneo. In particolare vuole avere una precisazione sul ruolo del Capitano del Golfo e sulla sua attività repressiva contro i corsari e pirati Barbareschi e Dulcignotti, che sempre di più sfidarono la sovranità marittima veneziana. La tesi si avvale di fonti archivistiche, atti del Senato e della Quarantia, nonché di cronache e testimonianze coeve.

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the structure and role of the maritime police of the Republic of Venice during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, within a broader context of political and economic decline. The study focuses on the functioning of the institutions responsible for controlling the waters, the repression of smuggling, the safeguarding of maritime trade, and the crisis of Venetian sovereignty in the Mediterranean. Particular attention is devoted to clarifying the role of the Capitano del Golfo and his repressive activities against Barbary and Dulcigno corsairs and pirates, who increasingly challenged Venetian maritime sovereignty. The thesis draws upon archival sources, acts of the Senate and the Quarantia, as well as contemporary chronicles and testimonies.
