I riscatti dei liguri in Maghreb al tramonto del fenomeno della cattività mediterranea (inizi XIX secolo)

Abstract

Dopo un periodo di relativa tranquillità, alla fine del Settecento, come conseguenza degli eventi rivoluzionari, il Mediterraneo è attraversato da una rinnovata ondata di attacchi corsari maghrebini. Le flotte di Algeri, Tunisi e Tripoli, come già nei secoli precedenti, non risparmiano, in particolare, i litorali ed i bastimenti degli stati italiani. Ancora nei primi decenni del XIX secolo, così, centinaia di liguri si trovarono schiavi in Nordafrica. Dopo aver definito le coordinate storico-sociali del fenomeno conosciuto come "schiavitù mediterranea", il presente scritto si concentra, anche attraverso l'utilizzo di fonti archivistiche, sulle vicende degli ultimi schiavi liguri in Nordafrica, ricostruendo l'attività redentiva portata avanti dagli organi preposti nel periodo ricompreso tra il 1797 ed il 1823.

After a period of decreasing activity, at the end of the eighteenth century, as a consequence of the revolutionary events, the Mediterranean was crossed by a renewed wave of Maghreb corsairs attacks. The fleets of Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli, as in previous centuries, did not spare, in particular, the coasts and ships of the Italian states. Even in the first decades of the nineteenth century, hundreds of Ligurians found themselves slaves in North Africa. Defined the historical- and the social coordinates of the phenomenon known as "Mediterranean slavery", the present paper focuses, also through the use of archival sources, on the events of the last Ligurian slaves in North Africa, reconstructing the redemptive activity carried out by the various bodies in charge, in the period between 1797 and 1823.
