Contrabbando, criminalità e marginalità nella Genova di età moderna.

Abstract

Per tutti i quattro secoli dell’età moderna Genova condivise, nel bene e nel male, le sorti delle città affacciate sul mar Mediterraneo: tutte attraversate nelle loro zone periferiche e, soprattutto, nel circondario del porto «da una folla straziante e dolente» che non si limitava «a ricevere l’aiuto offerto, ma cercava di sfruttare al meglio le istituzioni tramite l’invio di suppliche e sfruttando la frammentazione dei sistemi assistenziali urbani per ricevere tutti gli aiuti possibili». Il tentativo è quello di raccontare, analizzare e spiegare i «reietti» del pianeta Genova: una folla mai divenuta comunità nonostante l’età moderna si caratterizzi, invece, proprio con la nascita e la crescita delle piccole, spesso anche micro, comunità all’interno della dimensione città. La mia analisi si svilupperà come una sorta di racconto incardinato, però, alla documentazione - in qualche caso inedita, in altri ripresa ed inserita in un contesto «altro», nel tentativo di restituire non solo la realtà del tempo e dei fatti. Si affronteranno innanzitutto le reti e le strategie mercantili di Genova, pilastro dell’esistenza stessa della città e della sua prosperità, per concentrare poi lo sguardo sul contrabbando e sulle frodi, attività talmente diffuse e vitali da rappresentare un elemento irrinunciabile per le economie dell’Età moderna. Il terzo passaggio riguarda l’«invenzione» e lo sviluppo delle paste alimentari - e della pasta secca in particolare - di cui Genova diventerà leader ed esportatrice non solo della produzione ma soprattutto del know how.. E poi alle reti di assistenza che non miravano a risolvere le cause della fame endemica, ma almeno tentavano di assistere chi ne aveva bisogno. Ed in quest’ultimo caso non si può non parlare delle donne che, sono protagoniste in tutti gli scenari che ho descritto fin qui, ma sulle quali è imprescindibile non spostare la lente della riflessione a partire dall’aspetto più eclatante, diventato quasi un tòpos: la prostituzione.

In all four centuries of the modern age, Genoa shared the fate of the cities overlooking the Mediterranean Sea: all crossed in their peripheral areas and, above all, in the area surrounding the port «by a heart-rending and suffering crowd» that did not limit itself to receiving the help offered, but tried to make the most of the institutions by sending supplications and exploiting the fragmentation of the urban welfare systems to receive all possible help. The attempt is to tell, analyze and explain the «outcasts» of the planet Genoa: a crowd that never became a community despite the modern age being characterized, instead, by the birth and growth of small, often even micro, communities within the city dimension. My analysis will develop as a sort of story hinged, however, on documentation - in some cases unpublished, in other cases taken and inserted in an «other» context, in the attempt to restitute not only the reality of the time and the facts. First of all, we will address the networks and mercantile strategies of Genoa, a pillar of the very existence of the city and its prosperity, to then focus our attention on smuggling and fraud, activities so widespread and vital that they represent an indispensable element for the economies of the Modern Age. The third step concerns the "invention" and development of pasta - and dry pasta in particular - of which Genoa will become a leader and exporter not only of production but above all of know-how. And then the assistance networks that did not aim to resolve the causes of endemic fame, but at least attempted to assist those in need. And in this last case we cannot fail to mention the women who are protagonists in all the scenarios I have described so far, but on which it is essential not to shift the lens of reflection starting from the most striking aspect, which has almost become a topos: the prostitution.
