Come fare cose con l'arte: L'oggetto estetico come atto illocutorio

Abstract

Questa tesi esplora la possibilità di interpretare l’oggetto estetico come un atto linguistico, estendendo la teoria degli atti linguistici di John L. Austin all’ambito delle arti visive. A partire dal presupposto che parlare non significhi soltanto descrivere il mondo, ma anche fare qualcosa, ci si interroga su come anche le opere d’arte possano agire performativamente, producendo effetti simili a quelli degli enunciati linguistici. Il lavoro si articola in quattro capitoli: nella prima parte viene ricostruito il quadro teorico degli atti linguistici, con particolare attenzione alla distinzione tra atti locutori, illocutori e perlocutori, e al concetto di uptake (la ricezione dell’atto da parte del destinatario). Nella seconda parte si esplorano le applicazioni della teoria al linguaggio visivo, attraverso il contributo di autori come Søren Kjørup e Horst Bredekamp, introducendo nozioni come pictorial speech acts e atti iconici. Attraverso l’analisi di esempi storici e contemporanei, si mostra come le immagini possano svolgere funzioni illocutorie — dichiarative, direttive, espressive — analoghe a quelle del linguaggio verbale. Si affrontano anche le problematiche legate alla ricezione e al fallimento degli atti artistici, con un’attenzione specifica al concetto di ingiustizia discorsiva, che mette in luce le diseguaglianze nell'accesso alla forza performativa del linguaggio e dell’arte. La tesi propone infine una riflessione critica su cosa permetta, in un certo contesto, che un oggetto estetico venga riconosciuto come un determinato tipo di atto comunicativo. L’obiettivo è dimostrare che l’arte non si limita a rappresentare, ma interviene nel mondo sociale e comunicativo attraverso la sua forza illocutoria.

This thesis explores the possibility of interpreting aesthetic objects as speech acts, extending the theory of speech acts developed by John L. Austin to the visual arts. Starting from the idea that speaking is not only about describing the world but also doing something in saying it, the research investigates how artworks can perform actions and produce effects comparable to those of linguistic utterances. The thesis is structured into four chapters. The first outlines the theoretical framework of speech acts, with a focus on the distinction between locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts, and on the notion of uptake (i.e., the recognition of an act by its recipient). The second chapter explores how speech act theory has been applied to visual language, through the work of scholars such as Søren Kjørup and Horst Bredekamp, introducing concepts like pictorial speech acts and iconic acts. Through historical and contemporary examples, the thesis shows how images can fulfill illocutionary functions — declarative, directive, expressive — similar to verbal communication. It also addresses challenges related to the reception and failure of artistic acts, with particular attention to discursive injustice, which highlights inequalities in the access to performative power in both language and art. Ultimately, the thesis critically examines what makes an aesthetic object count as a particular kind of communicative act within a given context, arguing that art does not merely represent the world, but actively intervenes in it through its illocutionary force.
