El exilio español en Cuba: Concha Mendez

Abstract

La tesi affronta il tema dell’esilio repubblicano spagnolo a Cuba attraverso lo studio della figura di Concha Méndez, poetessa, drammaturga ed editrice, una delle protagoniste più significative della Generazione del ‘27. Il lavoro si propone di indagare come l’esperienza dell’esilio, inteso non solo come evento storico, ma come condizione esistenziale, abbia influenzato l’opera e l’identità artistica dell’autrice durante il suo soggiorno nell’isola caraibica tra il 1939 e il 1943. Lo studio si apre con una panoramica storica del conflitto civile spagnolo, considerato anche come riflesso delle tensioni ideologiche europee del XX secolo, e prosegue con una ricostruzione della diaspora repubblicana che coinvolse centinaia di migliaia di esiliati, compresi intellettuali e artisti. In particolare, si presta attenzione al ruolo di Cuba come destinazione secondaria ma significativa per molti rifugiati politici spagnoli. Si mette poi in luce il contributo femminile al dinamismo culturale sorto negli anni Venti e proseguito durante l’esilio, restituendo centralità a quelle autrici repubblicane che seppero trasformare l’esperienza dello sradicamento, tanto interiore quanto reale, in una forma di realizzazione letteraria. La parte centrale del lavoro è dedicata alla biografia e all’analisi delle opere scritte da Concha Méndez durante il suo esilio cubano, tra cui spiccano la raccolta poetica Lluvias enlazadas, l’opera in versi La caña y el tabaco e il dramma teatrale El solitario. Amor. Misterio en un acto. Attraverso questi testi, l’autrice affronta i temi della perdita, della solitudine, della nostalgia, ma anche della speranza e della ricerca di nuove prospettive esistenziali. Le opere rivelano un dialogo costante tra la memoria e il presente, tra l’identità personale e quella collettiva, tra l’eredità della Spagna democratica e la realtà alienante dell’esilio.

This thesis addresses the issue of the Spanish Republican exile in Cuba through the study of the figure of Concha Méndez, poet, playwright and editor, one of the most significant protagonists of the Generation of 27. The work aims to investigate how the experience of exile, understood not only as a historical event, but as a vital condition, influenced the work and artistic identity of the author during her stay on the Caribbean Island between 1939 and 1943.

The study opens with a historical overview of the Spanish civil conflict, also considered a reflection of the European ideological tensions of the twentieth century and continues with a reconstruction of the republican diaspora that involved hundreds of thousands of exiles, intellectuals and artists. Particular attention is paid to the role of Cuba as a secondary but meaningful destination for many Spanish political refugees. The thesis then highlights the female contribution to the cultural dynamism that emerged in the 1920s and continued throughout the exile, restoring centrality to those Republican women writers who managed to transform the experience of uprootedness, both inner and real, into a form of literary fullfillment.

The central part of the work is dedicated to the biography and analysis of the writings produced by Concha Méndez during her Cuban exile, among which the poetry collection Lluvias enlazadas, the theatre play La caña y el tabaco, and the drama El solitario. Amor. Misterio en un acto stand out. Through these texts, the author explores themes of loss, solitude, nostalgia, but also hope and search for new existential perspectives. The works reveal a constant dialogue between memory and the present, personal and collective identity, the legacy of democratic Spain, and the alienating reality of exile.
