Le maschere del teatro greco nell’Onomasticon di Polluce e nelle testimonianze archeologiche

Abstract

Questo studio prende le mosse dall’analisi delle maschere del teatro greco antico, basandosi sui capitoli 133-154 del libro IV dell’Onomasticon di Giulio Polluce e sulla base dei ritrovamenti archeologici ricollegabili alle maschere del teatro. La scelta del tema parte dal mio personale interesse per le maschere del teatro e l’intento di creare uno strumento di lavoro che possa fornire aiuto per i futuri studi su questo argomento. Ho iniziato partendo a tradurre il testo greco, poi ho condotto un’indagine su ogni tipologia di maschera, creando un confronto tra il testo scritto e le testimonianze. Attraverso questo lavoro sono riuscito a creare uno strumento di confronto per la maggior parte delle maschere presenti nel testo. Da quanto si è potuto constatare attraverso i ritrovamenti e il confronto con le descrizioni offerte da Polluce risulta innegabile che in molti punti la descrizione offerta dall’autore non è esaustiva e non permette una corretta identificazione del soggetto, mentre in altri punti i ritrovamenti presentano degli elementi che lo stesso Polluce non descrive nella sua opera ma che sono avvicinabili a uno dei tipi di maschera da lui individuati.

This study takes as its starting point the analysis of the masks of ancient Greek theatre, based on chapters 133-154 of Book IV of Julius Pollux's Onomasticon and on the basis of archaeological findings related to theatre masks. The choice of the topic stems from my personal interest in theatre masks and the intention to create a working tool that can provide help for future studies on this subject. I started by translating the Greek text, then I conducted an investigation into each type of mask, creating a comparison between the written text and the testimonies. Through this work, I was able to create a comparison tool for most of the masks in the text. From the findings and the comparison with the descriptions offered by Pollux, it is undeniable that in many points the description offered by the author is not exhaustive and does not allow for a correct identification of the subject, while in other points the findings present elements that Pollux himself does not describe in his work but that are close to one of the types of mask he identified.
