La diagnostica come scienza e conoscenza per il restauro: i reperti metallici dal sito sommerso del Gran Carro (Lago di Bolsena, VT)

Abstract

La tesi si concentra sullo studio di un gruppo di reperti in lega di rame provenienti dal sito sommerso del "Gran Carro" (Lago di Bolsena, VT). Obiettivo è raccogliere, attraverso indagini diagnostiche, tutte le informazioni possibili circa la produzione dei reperti e la composizione delle leghe in vista del futuro restauro. Il particolare ambiente di giacitura ha consentito che si sviluppasse una corrosione nera e che il metallo sottostante rimanesse in ottimo stato di conservazione. I campioni metallici studiati sono dei bronzi (lega Cu-Sn) con quantità di piombo basse; fa eccezione un reperto che si è scoperto essere un peltro (lega Sn-Pb) e non un bronzo.

The thesis focuses on the study of a group of copper alloy findings from the submerged site "Gran Carro" (Lake Bolsena, VT). The aim is to collect, through diagnostic investigations, all possible information about the production of the findings and the composition of the alloys in view of future restoration. The particular deposit environment allowed black corrosion to develop and the underlying metal to remain in an excellent state of conservation. The metal samples studied are bronzes (Cu-Sn alloy) with low quantities of lead; the exception is one finding that has been discovered to be a pewter (Sn-Pb alloy) and not a bronze.
