Traduzione e commento di “Uso dei Social Media e FoMO durante gli studi all’estero”

Abstract

Questo elaborato propone la traduzione dell’articolo “Social Media Use and the Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) While Studying Abroad” (Hetz, Dawson, & Cullen, 2015). Dopo una breve introduzione sulla FoMO (Fear of Missing Out) saranno presentati i due testi: prima quello originale e poi la sua traduzione, per poi passare ad una parte più teorica riguardante le strategie e le tecniche messe in atto nel processo traduttivo. Nel capitolo intitolato “Progetto e tecniche traduttologiche” sarà spiegata l’importanza di un progetto coerente da cui partire e saranno illustrate le diverse tecniche traduttive, prendendo come riferimento il manuale di “Teoria della Traduzione” della professoressa Laura Salmon (Salmon, 2017). Successivamente, nel capitolo “Analisi e commento traduttologico” sarà analizzato il testo nel suo insieme per poi concentrarsi sui due livelli di analisi linguistica maggiormente interessati durante il processo di traduzione: sintassi e lessico. Per ciascuno dei due sottocapitoli saranno evidenziati i problemi traduttologici e le relative soluzioni con particolare attenzione, nella parte riguardante il lessico, al problema della distanza culturale e come questo possa essere ovviato tramite l’ausilio di strategie precise. Un ulteriore sottocapitolo sarà dedicato agli anglicismi, alla loro presenza nel testo di arrivo e di come stiano entrando sempre di più a far parte dell’italiano contemporaneo. Infine, nel capitolo “Conclusioni” sarà riassunto il lavoro svolto e le conseguenti considerazioni finali, includendo anche una breve riflessione sul ruolo del traduttore.

This thesis aims to explore the field of translation and the work behind a translated work. I will focus on the proposed translation of the paper “Social Media Use and the Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) While Studying Abroad” (Hetz, Dawson, & Cullen, 2015), which has not yet been translated and whose original language is English. I start with a brief introduction about the concept of FoMO (Fear of Missing Out), the role that it plays nowadays in the life of the new generations and, consequently, why this specific paper was chosen. The translation of the paper will be then presented and later I will focus on the theoretical part regarding the translation process. In the chapter “Project and Translation Technics” the importance of a coherent initial project is explained, and the different translation technics are presented, based on the book “Teoria della Traduzione” written by the professor Laura Salmon (Salmon, 2017). Moving forward, in the chapter “Analysis and Comment to the Translation” the text as a whole will be analysed, to then focus on the two main level of linguistic analysis: syntax and lexicon. In these two paragraphs some of the problems the translator has to deal with will be highlighted and the two texts will be compared to show how these challenges were tackled. The concept of cultural issues and how it can be solved is also addressed; a real obstacle to translation since languages do not exist as isolated entities but are deeply linked to the culture they belong to. Following this line, a further paragraph is dedicated to anglicisms, their presence in the target text and the role they currently play in the Italian language. In the concluding chapter the entire work will be summarised and there will be a brief discussion about the role of the translator in our society.
