Decostruzione del mito della meritocrazia: un'analisi critica

Abstract

Questa tesi si pone l’obiettivo di analizzare criticamente il concetto di meritocrazia, esaminandone le implicazioni teoriche e pratiche nella società contemporanea. Nonostante il termine meritocrazia sia stato originariamente coniato dai suoi padri fondatori con intenti meramente critici e negativi, ad oggi, viene strumentalizzato ed elevato a sistema di giustizia morale, secondo cui il successo dipende unicamente dal talento ed impegno individuale. Tale visione suggerisce che chiunque, impegnandosi sufficientemente, possa raggiungere i propri obiettivi. Tuttavia, tramite una rassegna di studi, questa tesi evidenzierà i limiti di questa prospettiva, analizzando l’impatto che la meritocrazia ha nella legittimazione e perpetuazione delle disuguaglianze strutturali. Esaminando le politiche sociali ed educative si rivelerà come esse, influenzate dalla logica meritocratica e neoliberale, tendano a ignorare le disuguaglianze di partenza, a rafforzare i privilegi esistenti e a consolidare barriere che ostacolano l’effettivo accesso alle opportunità di successo.

This thesis aims to critically analyze the concept of meritocracy, examining its theoretical and practical implications in contemporary society. Although the term meritocracy was originally coined by its founding fathers with merely critical and negative intentions, today it is instrumentalized and elevated to a system of moral justice, where success depends solely on individual talent and commitment.This view suggests that anyone, with enough effort, can achieve their goals.However, through a review of studies, this thesis will highlight the limits of this perspective, analyzing the impact that meritocracy has on the legitimacy and perpetuation of structural inequalities.Examining social and educational policies will reveal that they, influenced by the meritocratic and neoliberal logic, tend to ignore the starting inequalities, reinforce existing privileges and and consolidate barriers that hinder effective access to opportunities for success.
