La relazione tra memoria di lavoro, funzioni esecutive e matematica nella prima adolescenza

Abstract

Ad oggi la letteratura in ambito psicologico e, in particolare, in psicologia cognitiva, è molto vasta. Gli studi condotti a partire da metà del secolo scorso e i modelli che spiegano il funzionamento mentale che ne sono derivati sono numerosi. La relazione tra i principali processi cognitivi alla base delle azioni quotidiane dell’uomo è stata discussa ampiamente. La tesi qui presentata, infatti, non solo si propone di indagare la connessione tra Memoria di Lavoro (WM) e Funzioni Esecutive (FE), ma anche la loro correlazione e implicazione in una ampia disciplina come la Matematica. Il primo capitolo analizza il concetto di Memoria di Lavoro, descrivendo i modelli formulati dai principali autori che, negli anni, hanno approfondito l’argomento; inoltre, tratta separatamente due sottocomponenti del costrutto: la Memoria di Lavoro Visuospaziale e quella Fonologica. Il secondo capitolo tratta il “termine ombrello” delle Funzioni Esecutive, che comprendono più processi cognitivi; tra questi vengono descritti quelli che, più frequentemente, sono stati trattati nella letteratura precedente: il controllo inibitorio, la pianificazione del comportamento, la flessibilità mentale e l’attenzione (selettiva e sostenuta). L’ultimo paragrafo è dedicato all’illustrazione di alcuni test utilizzati per la valutazione. Il terzo e il quarto capitolo sono dedicati all’esposizione della ricerca diretta dall’Università degli Studi di Genova, sulla base della quale è stato costruito il presente lavoro. L’obiettivo è quello di verificare la presenza di una relazione tra WM, FE e Matematica e di comprendere in che modo e in che misura i primi due concetti contribuiscono alla prestazione in compiti matematici. Si descrivono la procedura con cui è stato condotto lo studio e le prove somministrate, concludendo con l’analisi dei dati e la loro discussione finale, che permette di rispondere ai quesiti posti, raggiungendo l’obiettivo iniziale.

To date, the literature in the field of psychology and, in particular, cognitive psychology, is vast. Studies conducted since the middle of the last century and models explaining mental functioning derived from them are numerous. The relationship between the main cognitive processes underlying human daily actions has been discussed extensively. Indeed, the thesis presented here not only aims to investigate the connection between Working Memory (WM) and Executive Functions (EF), but also their correlation and implication in a broad discipline such as Mathematics. The first chapter analyzes the concept of Working Memory, describing the models formulated by the main authors who, over the years, have delved into the subject; it also deals separately with two subcomponents of the construct: Visuospatial and Phonological Working Memory. The second chapter deals with the “umbrella term” of Executive Functions, which encompasses multiple cognitive processes; among them, those that, most frequently, have been covered in the previous literature are described: inhibitory control, behavior planning, mental flexibility, and attention (selective and sustained). The last section is devoted to an illustration of some tests used for assessment. The third and fourth chapters are devoted to the exposition of the research directed by the University of Genoa, on the basis of which the present work was constructed. The objective is to verify the presence of a relationship between WM, EF and Mathematics and to understand how and to what extent the first two concepts contribute to performance in mathematical tasks. The procedure by which the study was conducted and the tests administered are described, concluding with the analysis of the data and their final discussion, which allows the questions posed to be answered, achieving the initial objective.
