"The Shining". Da Stephen King a Stanley Kubrick. Continuità, differenze, contrasti.

Abstract

In questa Tesi, composta da quattro capitoli e diversi sottocapitoli, si andranno a trattare le differenze principali tra il romanzo The Shining, del famoso scrittore statunitense Stephen King, e l’omonimo film di Stanley Kubrick. Sono state fatte diverse ricerche in internet ed è stato preso in considerazione, in particolare, un libro specifico sull’argomento, oltre a, ovviamente, il romanzo principale e la visione della pellicola.

Si partirà da una descrizione accurata del romanzo e del film. Per quanto riguarda il romanzo, dopo una breve descrizione della vita e delle opere principali di King, si sono esaminate le varie ispirazioni che ha avuto quest’ultimo e la trama, con una descrizione accurata dei personaggi insieme a quella del luogo principale dove si svolge l’intera vicenda, l’Overlook Hotel, e, infine, ci si è soffermati su alcuni significati simbolici che King ha attribuito al suo romanzo.

Invece, per quanto riguarda la pellicola, verrà fatta una breve introduzione sul regista, seguita da un’analisi delle diverse ispirazioni che ha avuto per il suo film, di tutto ciò che era servito per realizzarlo (tecniche utilizzate, ambientazione etc.), e della trama, seguita da un approfondimento di una delle scene più famose e delle condizioni emotive degli attori durante le riprese. Inoltre, verranno presi in considerazione gli aneddoti più curiosi e bizzarri riguardo la pellicola.

Infine, romanzo e film verranno analizzati, evidenziando le differenze presenti tra le due opere, partendo da quelle più sostanziali a quelle “minori”, per concludere, nell’ultimo capitolo, con le varie critiche che Stephen King ha avuto nei confronti di Stanley Kubrick e viceversa, analizzando in modo particolare diverse interviste che sono state fatte allo scrittore.

In this Thesis, composed of four chapters and several subchapters, we will discuss the main differences between the novel The Shining, by the famous American writer Stephen King, and the homonymous film by Stanley Kubrick. Most of the research was done through the internet and a specific book on the subject has been considered, as well as, of course, the main novel and the original film.

We will start from an accurate description of the novel and the film. As for the novel, after a brief description of King’s life and major works, we are going to examine the various inspirations and the plot, with an accurate description of the characters along with that of the main place where the story takes place, the Overlook Hotel, and finally, some symbolic meanings that King attributed to his novel.

As for the film, there will be a brief introduction about the director, followed by an analysis of the different inspirations for his film, of all that was needed to make it (techniques used, setting etc.), followed by an in depth look at one of the most famous scenes and the emotional conditions of the actors during filming. In addition, the most curious and bizarre anecdotes about the film will be examined and explained.

Finally, novel and film will be analyzed, highlighting the differences between the two works, starting from the most substantial to the "minor" ones and, to conclude, in the last chapter, with the various criticisms that Stephen King had regarding Kubrick’s adaptation and vice versa, analyzing several interviews with the writer.
