Mother blaming: I processi di responsabilizzazione delle madri rispetto alla salute dei propri figli

Abstract

Questa tesi è dedicata al tema del mother blaming, ovvero il processo di colpevolizzazione delle madri per tutto ciò che non va nei loro figli, processo promosso sotto la facciata della “responsabilizzazione” materna, per cui tramite la diffusione del concetto neoliberale di buon cittadino, le donne vengono chiamate a dimostrare capacità di autocontrollo e di autogovernarsi, esplicate nel prendersi carico della cura e della formazione del nuovo cittadino. Nel primo capitolo si introducono il concetto di mother blaming e di buona madre e si cerca di comprendere quale sia il contesto socio-culturale in cui si sono nati e si sono sviluppati. Nel secondo capitolo ci si focalizza sulle diverse ricerche in sociologia e psicologia che nello studiare e teorizzare diverse forme di disturbi mentali, disturbi del neurosviluppo e devianze definite socialmente si sono incentrate sulla diade madre-figlio, presentando la tendenza di ricercare nella madre la causa dell’origine e/o dello sviluppo di tali problematiche. Il terzo capitolo ha come interesse centrale le varie forme di colpevolizzazione che subiscono le madri single, che oltre che venir colpevolizzate per lo sviluppo atipico e/o deviante dei figli, vengono giudicate come non adeguate in quanto fuori dai canoni tradizionali. Come esempio si citano le madri afro-americane single, etichettate spesso come cattive madri dati i loro stili genitoriali che potrebbero non essere considerati in linea con il modello white-centered dell’intensive mothering. Nella conclusione faccio emergere la mia prospettiva sui sistemi di colpevolizzazione della madre, evidenziando i contrasti che caratterizzano le ideologie di cui parlo nella tesi e le richieste poste alle madri che si scontrano con la realtà. Sollecito maggiori prospettive femministe affinché si possano teorizzare nuovi costrutti e indagare i disagi dei futuri cittadini guardando ad aspetti più complessi e completi che non si fermano alla sola influenza materna.

This thesis is dedicated to the theme of mother blaming, which refers to the process of making mothers responsible for everything that goes wrong with their children. This process is promoted under the facade of maternal "responsibility," for which due to the spread of the neoliberal concept of the good citizen, women are asked to demonstrate self-control and self-government by taking responsibility for the care and upbringing of the new citizen. The first chapter introduces the concepts of “mother blaming” and “good mother”, trying meanwhile to understand the socio-cultural context in which they were born and developed. The second chapter focuses on various sociological and psychological researches that have based their theory, about different forms of mental disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders and socially defined deviances, on the mother-child dyad, often attributing the cause of these issues to the mother. In the third chapter I talk about the different forms of blame faced by single mothers, who not only are blamed for the atypical or deviant development of their children but are also judged as inadequate for not conforming to traditional norms. I brought as an example the African Americans single mothers that are often labeled as bad mothers due to their parenting styles that may not align with the white-centered model of intensive mothering. In the conclusion, I bring out my view about the systems of mother blaming, highlighting the contrasts between the ideologies discussed in the thesis and the collide with reality of the demands placed on mothers. I support the idea of more feminist perspectives to theorize new constructs and investigate the struggles of future citizens, considering more complex aspects that go beyond the only maternal influence.
