Abstract

Questa tesi esamina la complessa storia e l'evoluzione del coinvolgimento dei foreign fighters nei conflitti internazionali, che vanno dal XIX secolo alla più recente guerra in Ucraina. La tesi si concentrerà non solo sullo sviluppo storico del fenomeno ma anche sulle molteplici cause che spingono queste persone a combattere in vari periodi storici e conflitti. Con la recente invasione dell'Ucraina nel 2022, la questione dei combattenti stranieri è diventata ancora più pertinente a causa del crescente numero di persone che si stanno muovendo per partecipare ai combattimenti e del rinnovato interesse dei media sull'argomento. È quindi essenziale comprendere le cause e le conseguenze di questo fenomeno al fine di creare risposte politiche efficaci e dissipare certi miti diffusi riguardo al tema.

This thesis examines the complicated history and evolving landscape of foreign fighter participation in international conflicts, ranging from the 19th century to the more recent war in Ukraine. The thesis will center not only on the historical development of the phenomena but also on the many causes driving these individuals to fight in various historical periods and conflicts. With the impending invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the issue of foreign fighters has become even more pertinent because of the growing number of people who are moving to partake in the fighting and the media's renewed interest in the subject. It is then essential to comprehend the causes and consequences of this phenomenon in order to create effective policy responses and dispel certain widespread myths regarding the topic.
