Dalla guerra in Afghanistan all'invasione russa dell'Ucraina: il caso dei foreign fighters ceceni nei conflitti interni e interstatali

Abstract

Questa tesi ha lo scopo di analizzare il fenomeno dei foreign fighters partendo dall’invasione sovietica dell’Afghanistan e attraversandone l’evoluzione tramite i successivi conflitti, fino all’attuale conflitto in Ucraina, ponendo il focus sui combattenti ceceni, che si sono contraddistinti per la loro incredibile abilità di adattarsi all’evoluzione e per la loro ferocia. In partenza il primo capitolo definisce il fenomeno dei foreign fighters, analizzando quali possano essere le cause che spingono un individuo a combattere in un paese estero, il rapporto che intercorre tra i volontari e i civili e la conseguente minaccia di terrorismo nei paesi di origine. Dopodiché si concentra sulle figure principali del jihad moderno, cominciando da Abdullah Azzam che si è contraddistinto per il suo operato durante la guerra in Afghanistan, poi sulla persona di bin Laden. Tramite Barbaros, a capo dell’unità El Mudzahid, approfondisce la guerra in Bosnia avvenuta tra il 1992 e il 1995 per poi concentrarsi sul conflitto ceceno, nella quale i jihadisti hanno avuto un ruolo molto importante, grazie anche alla loro capacità di sfruttare l’esperienza sul campo dei veterani e all’abile utilizzo della propaganda moderna. Nel terzo capitolo viene strutturata la storia della nascita dello Stato Islamico partendo dall’insurrezione fino al 2011, quando scoppiò la guerra in Siria, della quale sono stati esposti gli eventi chiave e viene esaminata l’influenza jihadista. L’elaborato termina mettendo in luce nell’ultimo capitolo l’avvenimento che ha reso i foreign fighters grandi protagonisti: la guerra Ucraina.

This thesis aims to analyze the phenomenon of foreign fighters, starting with the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and traversing its evolution through subsequent conflicts to the current conflict in Ukraine, placing the focus on Chechen fighters, who have distinguished themselves by their incredible ability to adapt to evolution and their ferocity. At the outset, the first chapter defines the phenomenon of foreign fighters, analyzing what may be the causes that drive an individual to fight in a foreign country, the relationship between volunteers and civilians, and the resulting threat of terrorism in the countries of origin. After that, he focuses on the main figures of modern jihad, beginning with Abdullah Azzam, who distinguished himself during the war in Afghanistan, and then on the person of bin Laden. Through Barbaros, who headed the El Mudzahid unit, he delves into the Bosnian war that took place between 1992 and 1995 and then focuses on the Chechen conflict, in which jihadists played a very important role, thanks in part to their ability to take advantage of veterans' field experience and skillful use of modern propaganda. In the third chapter, the history of the emergence of the Islamic State is structured starting from the insurgency to 2011, when the war in Syria broke out, the key events of which are laid out and jihadist influence is examined. The paper ends by highlighting in the last chapter the event that made foreign fighters big players: the Ukrainian War.
