Martin Luther King e Malcom X negli Stati Uniti degli anni Sessanta tra culture visuali e diritti civili

Abstract

L'oggetto di studio della mia tesi verte su due figure iconiche della storia dei diritti civili degli afroamericani negli anni Sessanta: Martin Luther King e Malcolm X e come quest'ultimi sono stati raccontati dall'industria mediatica attraverso le fotografie di quell'epoca fino ai giorni nostri, in particolare restringendo il campo al contesto italiano. Attraverso la cultura visuale e i suoi concetti chiave guarderemo ai documenti visuali prodotti in passato e più recentemente sui due protagonisti in Italia per scoprire se è avvenuto un processo di risignificazione della loro immagine e tenteremo di scoprire che cos'è rimasto nella memoria della nuova generazione di questi due personaggi.

The subject of my thesis focuses on two iconic figures in the history of African American civil rights in the Sixties: Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. I will examine how they have been portrayed by the media industry through photographs from that time to the present day, with a particular focus on the Italian context.

Through visual culture and its key concepts, I will analyze visual documents produced in the past and more recently on the two protagonists in Italy. My goal is to discover if there has been a process of re-signification of their image and to understand what remains in the memory of the new generation about these two characters.
