L'officina teorica di Edward Gordon Craig

Abstract

la tesi tratta le tappe del travagliato percorso che hanno portato Edward Gordon Craig, un regista e teorico del teatro inglese del xx secolo, alla stesura finale di The Art of The Theatre, nel 1905. Diverse personalità e esperienze, infattI, concorrono all'officina teorica di Gordon Craig. Dalle difficoltà incontrate nel suo primo tentativo di regia Craig, inizia a formulare l'ipotesi che il teatro debba essere riformato nel suo profondo. Da questa consapevolezza nascono in primo luogo una serie di articoli, legati al tema, che verranno pubblicati sul Morning Post nel 1903. Altri tentativi di Scrittura sono rappresentati da due Manoscritti, il secondo dei quali è strettamente collegato alla versione definitiva di The Art of The Theatre. Tra le personalità che concorrono all'officina Teorica di Craig possiamo citare il conte Harry Kessler e la sua esperienza di Weimar, l'architetti e maestro del Arts and Crafts Van De Velde, i tentativi di collaborazione con i registi Reinhardt e Brahm e ultima ma non per importanza la relazione con la ballerina americana Isadora Duncan. Tutti questi elementi concorrono a far meritare a Craig il titolo di primo grande teorico del teatro moderno Europeo.

The thesis deals with the stages of the troubled path, which led Edward Gordon Craig,a director and theatre Theorist, English of the twentieth century, to the final draft of the Art Of The Theatre, in 1905. Different personalities and experiences contributed to Craig's theoretical workshop. From the difficulties encountered in his first attempt at directing Craig began to formulate the hypothesis that the Theatre mest be reformed in its depths. From this awareness comes a series of articles, related to the theme, which will be published in the Morning Post in 1903. Other attempts at writing are represented by two Manuscripts, the second of which is closely related to the definitive version of the Art of the Theatre.Among the personalities who compete in Craig's Theoretical workshop we can mention Count Harry Kessler and his experience in Weimar, the architects and master of Arts and Crafts Van De Velde, the attempts to collaborate with the directors Reinhardt and Brahm and last but not least the relationship with the American dancer Isadora Duncan. All these elements combine to earn Craig the title of the first great theorist of modern European theater.
