L'epistolografia d'uso nel Seicento: un sondaggio nel Capitolo Diocesano di Alba

Abstract

Il presente elaborato si propone, dopo aver tracciato un quadro del genere epistolare d’uso nel secolo XVII, di fare un’analisi storico-linguistica di alcune lettere inviate al Capitolo Diocesano di Alba nella seconda metà del secolo. La trattazione si articola in tre capitoli che si soffermano sulle seguenti tematiche: in primo luogo si analizza il genere epistolografico del ‘600 con le sue caratteristiche di stile e forma; nel secondo capitolo si esaminano l’epistolografia d’uso e il valore di mittenti e destinatari non colti; infine, ci si sofferma sul contesto del Fondo del Capitolo Diocesano di Alba e sulla trascrizione e analisi delle lettere a quello inviate, riordinate a fine del secolo XVIII dal barone Giuseppe Vernazza di Freney, erudito e latinista albese che si occupò della storia locale e della conservazione degli archivi. Il lavoro, quindi, si è concentrato inizialmente su una trattazione teorica del genere epistolare seicentesco, dei suoi modelli cinquecenteschi e del cerimoniale ben codificato che lo caratterizza, per poi soffermarsi sui tratti che distinguono l’epistolografia d’uso degli scriventi non colti, esaminando i diversi fenomeni che caratterizzano i vari livelli di semplificazione linguistica del testo. Tramite l’analisi delle lettere inviate al Capitolo, infatti, è stato possibile osservare da vicino i casi e i fenomeni considerati fino a quel momento: a emergere in testi prevalentemente paratattici con una punteggiatura quasi assente sono stati fenomeni di analogia e ipercorrettismo che hanno portato soprattutto a confusione sulla geminazione delle consonanti e sull’impiego di "h", a numerosi richiami alla grafia latina, alla sovraestensione di "li" per tutti gli articoli determinativi plurali.

This paper aims, after tracing a picture of the genre of letters of use in the seventeenth century, to make a historical-linguistic analysis of some letters sent to the Diocesan Chapter of Alba in the second half of the century. The discussion is divided into three chapters that focus on the following themes: first, the epistolographic genre of the '600 is analyzed with its style and shape characteristics; in the second chapter we examine the epistolography of use and the value of unseen senders and recipients; finally, we focus on the context of the Fund of the Diocesan Chapter of Alba and the transcription and analysis of letters sent to that sent, reorganized at the end of the eighteenth century by Baron Giuseppe Vernazza di Freney, scholar and Latinist from Alba who took care of local history and the preservation of archives. The work, therefore, initially focused on a theoretical treatment of the genre of seventeenth-century epistolary, of its sixteenth-century models and of the well-codified ceremonial that characterizes it, and then to dwell on the traits that distinguish the epistolography of use of uncleared writers, examining the various phenomena that characterize the various levels of linguistic simplification of the text. Through the analysis of the letters sent to the Chapter, in fact, it was possible to observe closely the cases and phenomena considered up to that moment: to emerge in mainly paratactic texts with an almost absent punctuation were phenomena of analogy and hypercorrectness that led above all to confusion about the gemination of consonants and the use of h, to numerous references to Latin spelling, the overextension of li for all plural determinative articles.
