Leptis Magna:Villa di Silin e analisi del complesso termale

Abstract

L’obiettivo di questo elaborato è quello di proporre un quadro quanto più chiaro e completo della storia della Villa di Silin a Leptis Magna. La scelta di questo sito archeologico è stata determinata da diversi elementi. In primis per l’interesse che la città di Leptis Magna ricopre per gli studi della società romana delle provincie e per la produzione artistica e architettonica di quest’ultima. La Villa di Silin rappresenta uno dei pochi esemplari di abitazione privata portati alla luce nella città libica ed oltre ad essere stata riscoperta in tempi abbastanza recenti, ha visto attive nelle missioni archeologiche, per quasi tutta la sua totalità, equipe e università italiane. La tesi è articolata in tre parti. Nella prima viene affrontata brevemente la storia che ha portato alla fondazione e allo sviluppo della città di Leptis Magna, analizzando i principali monumenti pubblici della città, i commerci, lo sviluppo economico e descrivendone la storia della scoperta archeologica e le prime fasi di restauro. La seconda parte invece si focalizza sulla storia e sull’analisi della Villa di Silin nel suo complesso, ponendo particolare attenzione alla suddivisione degli ambienti e alla decorazione che si conserva ancora in ottime condizioni, sia per quanto riguarda la decorazione musiva presente in percentuale maggiore, sia per le pitture e gli stucchi. Per finire, l’ultima parte tratta lo studio e l’analisi del complesso termale annesso alla villa, ipotizzando quale potesse essere il percorso all’interno dei bagni e il passaggio da un’ambiente all’altro, specificando la funzione di ognuno.

The objective of this thesis to propose clearly and completly a picture of the history of the Villa of Silin in Leptis Magna. The choice of this archaeological site was determined by several elements. First of all for the interest that the city of Leptis Magna holds for the studies of the Roman society of the provinces and for the artistic and architectural production of the latter. The Villa of Silin represents one of the few examples of private dwellings brought to light in the Libyan city, and in addition to having been rediscovered in fairly recent times, it has seen Italian teams and universities active in archaeological missions for almost its entirety. This thesis is divided into three parts. In the first I briefly addressed the history that led to the foundation and development of the city of Leptis Magna, analyzing the main public monuments of the city, focusing on trade, economic development and describing the history of archaeological discovery and the first phases of restoration. The second part instead focuses on the history and analysis of the Villa of Silin as a whole, paying particular attention to the division of the rooms and the decoration which is still preserved in excellent condition, both with regards to the mosaic decoration present in a greater percentage, both for paints and stuccos. Finally, the last part deals with the study and analysis of the thermal complex attached to the villa, hypothesizing what the path inside the bathrooms and the passage from one room to another could have been, specifying the function of each one.
