Auto-oggettivazione sessuale nelle relazioni interpersonali.

Abstract

L’auto-oggettivazione sessuale della donna nelle relazioni interpersonali è un fenomeno molto diffuso nella società occidentale, ed è considerata la diretta conseguenza dell’oggettivazione sessuale, ovvero di tutte quelle esperienze in cui una persona viene trattata come se fosse un oggetto, al fine di soddisfare i desideri sessuali altrui. L’auto-oggettivazione, essendo un fenomeno molto pervasivo, causa molte conseguenze negative sia a livello psicologico che fisico. Di conseguenza, nella seguente tesi viene presentato uno studio sul ruolo dei goal sessuali nelle relazioni oggettivanti. L’obbiettivo di tale studio è di indagare come la presenza dei goal sessuali (vs. assenza) durante un’interazione oggettivante influenza i livelli di auto-oggettivazione; maggiore importanza attribuita al corpo e tendenza a monitorare il proprio aspetto. Considerata la pervasività dell’auto-oggettivazione e le sue conseguenze negative, riteniamo che il nostro studio possa evidenziare una potenziale fonte di questo processo, ovvero l’attivazione dei goal sessuali delle donne (all’interno di una cultura patriarcale). In generale, le ricerche e gli interventi futuri dovrebbero avere come obbiettivo principale la creazione di una società in cui il genere femminile si senta libero di possedere il proprio corpo e di curare il proprio aspetto senza giudicarlo sulla base degli standard di bellezza imposti dalla società prevalentemente maschilista.

The sexual self-objectification of women in interpersonal relationships is a widespread phenomenon in Western society, and is considered the direct consequence of sexual objectification, or all those experiences in which a person is treated as an object, in order to satisfy the sexual desires of others. Self-objectification, being a very pervasive phenomenon, causes many negative consequences both psychologically and physically. Accordingly, in the following thesis a study on the role of sexual goals in objective relationships is presented. The objective of this study is to investigate how the presence of sexual goals (vs. absence) during an objective interaction affects the levels of self-objectification; greater importance attributed to the body and tendency to monitor their appearance. Given the pervasiveness of self-objectification and its negative consequences, we believe that our study can highlight a potential source of this process, namely the activation of women’s sexual goals (within a patriarchal culture). In general, future research and interventions should have as their main objective the creation of a society in which the female gender feels free to possess their own body and to treat their appearance without judging it on the basis of the standards of beauty imposed by the predominantly male-dominated society.
