Trump vs Biden: analisi comparativa sul discorso del cambiamento climatico

Abstract

La questione climatica è davvero un’area in cui i Repubblicani americani, qui rappresentati dall’ex presidente Trump, si trovano tutt’oggi in difficoltà rispetto ai colleghi Democratici? È veramente presente una differenza sostanziale per quel che concerne la comunicazione riguardo il climate change da parte dei due ultimi presidenti americani? Per rispondere a questi quesiti di ricerca, il presente elaborato è stato strutturato in tre capitoli tra loro complementari: il primo cerca di delineare brevemente le biografie dei due protagonisti, focalizzandosi anche sui loro tratti psicologici più peculiari, sulle maggiori politiche attuate durante il proprio mandato e sulla loro vita privata; il secondo è invece mirato ad individuare gli eventi salienti che hanno portato il riscaldamento globale a diventare una delle sfide più difficili per la politica internazionale, con un focus particolare sul ruolo degli Stati Uniti e sulle politiche particolari attuate da Trump e Biden; il terzo e ultimo capitolo si propone infine di analizzare un totale di undici discorsi (5 per Trump, 4 per Biden e 2 confronti elettorali televisivi; tutti tenuti tra il 2017 ed il 2022) attraverso una metodologia sia di tipo qualitativo sia di tipo quantitativo. Come verrà dimostrato, i risultati saranno tanto certi nel rispondere al primo quesito quanto incerti nell’individuare una tendenza comunicativa stabile relativamente alla seconda domanda.

Is the climate question still the single issue on which Republicans, here represented by former President Trump, are the most vulnerable, as suggested by Luntz in 2002? Is there any substantial difference for what concerns the communication towards climate change operated by the two last American presidents? In order to answer to these research questions, this paper has been structured into three complementary chapters. The first one tries to delineate the respective salient points inside the biography of our two main characters, with a further specification on subjects regarding their idiosyncratic personality traits, the main policies achieved during their mandate and their personal life. Furthermore, the second chapter is aimed at pinpointing the most important events, from 1960s to nowadays, that contributed to shape the current international policies and activities to counteract global warming, with a particular focus on the decisive role of the United States (also considering the fact that it represents one of the main greenhouse emitters in the World ) and the principal environmental policies operated during their mandate by Trump and Biden and their administrations. Lastly, the third chapter contains the operative analysis of a total amount of eleven public discourses (5 pronounced by Trump, 4 by Biden and 2 face-to-face electoral debates) all held between 2017 and 2022): in this sense, a qualitative method of analysis has been developed by referring to three variables that can be reconducted to the fields of grammar, persuasion and rhetoric. Moreover, a quantitative method has been used to furtherly confirm what had previously been found through two different tools that allowed both to create visual elements and spotting “keywords” that usually presented and augmented frequency if compared to a mixed corpus of 5 million of words.
