This thesis analyzes the relationship between art, politics, and society during the French Revolution through the lens of the social history of art. By examining some of Jacques-Louis David's most significant works, it traces the transformation of Neoclassical visual language, before focusing on the painting of Louis-Léopold Boilly. In doing so, it defines the emergence of the modern artist as an autonomous professional integrated into the social and economic dynamics of bourgeois society.en_UK
