| it_IT |
| dc.description.abstract | This thesis aims to examine the extent to which Christian ecclesial communities can promote the collective well-being of their members. The work is based on a review of the empirical literature, analysed through four community psychology constructs associated with social well-being: social capital, sense of community, empowerment and social support. The empirical findings are compared with the principles that Christian traditions declare as their foundations, such as koinonia and diakonia. The review shows that the four constructs are widely present in ecclesial communities and that positive outcomes depend mainly on the relational configuration of the community, rather than on religious affiliation or attendance alone. However, the same relational density can also produce negative effects, such as the exclusion of dissenting members, isolation from the surrounding context and closure towards those perceived as different. The thesis concludes that ecclesial communities are a potentially favourable ground for collective well-being, provided that their declared values are consistent with community practices; when this consistency is lacking, the outcomes may be the opposite. Finally, the thesis proposes a possible collaboration between community psychology and congregations: churches offer stable networks and values akin to the constructs examined, while community psychology can provide tools to make services more continuous and to reflect on the consistency between values and practices. | en_UK |
