Despite the intrinsically social nature of collective trauma, through its influence on the relaionships between people and groups, as well as on the construction of the interested community's identity, this construct has effects on individuals as well. Trauma is transmitted inderectly through exposure to mass media broadcasting details about the event, through indirect trauma of rescue personnel, and through the intergenerational effects on biology, affect and behavior. The instruments to measure it focus on level of exposure, adverse childhood experiences, pervasiveness of psychiatric symptoms such as PTSD and depression, or consequences on family coping. Finally, attachment determines both the type of behavioral response to the disaster and the vulnerability to psychopathology.en_UK
