This thesis aims to investigate the representation of the post-2001 Afghan conflict through the relationship between the use of media frames in interpreting reality and the role of literature in deconstructing this event, specifically using Khaled Hosseini’s novel A Thousand Splendid Suns as a tool for counter-narrative. The structure of the work is divided into three main chapters. The first chapter presents the theoretical foundations of constructivism and, specifically, framing theory, demonstrating how socio-political reality takes shape through a series of subjective interpretive frames and shared narratives. In the interpretation of conflicts, war frames are capable of steering public opinion toward a specific representation and influencing policy-making. The second chapter delves into the post-2001 Afghan conflict, analyzing the US-led "War on Terror" and the failure of the state-building process, both legitimized by a strategic human-rights-oriented reframing. The role of women is subordinated to US political and military objectives: by portraying themselves as saviors, the United States contributes to turning women into passive figures, subaltern to both patriarchy and Western geopolitical goals. Finally, the third chapter explores the role of literature as a counter-narrative mechanism within the context of the media representation of the Afghan conflict. Through the novel "A Thousand Splendid Suns", hegemonic stereotypes are dismantled, and the conflict regains its complexity through the analysis of both historical and emotional dimensions, embodied by women striving for resistance. Literature thus emerges as a space for deconstructing dominant narratives, reattributing depth in the face of media simplifications.en_UK
