The mechanical behaviour of soils strongly depends on the degree of saturation, i.e., the presence of a certain quantity of water in the intergranular spaces. Soil can be classified into three types based on the degree of saturation: saturated soils, partially saturated soils and dry soils. Saturated soils are characterized by the presence of water alone in the intergranular spaces. Artially saturated soils are characterized by the coexistence of water and air in the intergranular spaces. Dry soils are characterized by the complete absence of water, which it means there is the presence of air alone. Over the years, many studies have been conducted to describe the mechanical behaviour, particullary the partial saturated soils. The thesis focuses on the cases of drry soils and saturated soil and on how the presence of the water alone, or its complete absence, can affect their mechanical behaviour. As a first step, a bibliographical study of the capillar’s functions from literature was conducted. Next, the functions were applied to saturated soils and dry soils. It was found that some of these functions are not reliable for the extreme cases considered in this study. Subsequently, an experimental campaign was conducted in the Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory of the University of Genoa, located at Villa Cambiaso. The experimental campaign consisted of a series of oedometer tests conducted with the instruments Trisan-100 Pro, VJ Tech, on soil samples with different grain-soze distributions, first under dry conditions and then under saturated conditions. Oedometer tests allow the evaluation of strength and deformability parameters. Known stresses are applied to small soil specimens, and the resulting deformations or induced stresses are measured. The Axial Frame measurement method, which records the displacement of the system, and the LVDT (Linear Variable Differential Transformer), which directly measures the displacement of the sample, were used to evaluate the deforen_UK
