| it_IT |
| dc.description.abstract | Forty-eight years after the enactment of Law 180, which mandated the closure of psychiatric hospitals across the national territory and established a network of community mental health centers, the Italian literary landscape is witnessing a significant proliferation of writings known as psychopatographies, which center on the theme of mental distress. In particular, autopathographies, autobiographical writings produced by individuals suffering from a mental illness, hold a great fascination for contemporary readers, whose receptivity is the result of a shift that, beginning in the second half of the last century, has affected both literary tastes and values of the society. This paper, therefore, aims to present the richness of this literary strand and, specifically, of autopathographies written by female authors who, as women, have been victims of a dual stigma: a social stigma, as psychiatric patients, and a gender-based stigma, due to their inability to fulfill conventional societal roles. The primary objective, therefore, is to outline the success of female mental health narratives by investigating the historical and literary factors that have made today's audience so sensitive to the themes of the stigma of madness and gender emancipation, and, at the same time, highly fascinated by autobiographical and diary-based writings. Secondly, the intent is to provide an authentic testament to the evolution of psychiatric healthcare service management and the public perception of mental suffering and those affected by it. Indeed, through the analysis of the three novels chosen as case studies for this thesis, it is possible to examine, via the experiences of the three authors, the reality of deinstitutionalization and its close dialogue with feminist movements, which worked in synergy to dismantle a deep-rooted patriarchal system that, even within the healthcare system, was as oppressive as it was inefficient. | en_UK |
