| it_IT |
| dc.description.abstract | The present thesis analyzes empathy by overcoming the rhetoric that considers it always a positive feeling, to investigate its complexity, intrinsic limits and the possibilities of ethical empowerment.
The first chapter traces the evolution of the concept starting from the two etymological roots. The phenomenological debate, which defines it as a recognition of the otherness of the other, is examined, up to Scheler's critiques and Nussbaum's rational compassion.
In the second chapter, the illusion of empathy as an always benevolent emotion is deconstructed. Through authors such as Baron-Cohen, Fuchs, Prinz and Bloom, the risks of partiality, manipulation, sadism and empathic distress are highlighted, showing how spontaneous empathy is insufficient for ethics.
The third and final chapter explores the solutions offered by moral enhancement in bioethics, declined in three approaches: the biomedical one, which involves the use of oxytocin to promote altruism. The technological one, which uses Virtual Reality as an empathy machine. Finally, the moral one, which sees empathy as a virtue guided by reason and Aristotelian practical wisdom.
In conclusion, the thesis shows that only the awareness of the structural limits of empathy allows it to be integrated in a mature way with biology, technology and rational commitment, transforming it into a real tool for welcoming the other. | en_UK |
