This systematic review examines the relationship between core executive functions and individual economic-financial decision-making processes within the theoretical framework proposed by Adele Diamond (2013), with the aim of providing an overview of the role of working memory, inhibitory control, and cognitive flexibility in financial decision-making domains such as money management, investment, saving, and risk evaluation. The review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines through a literature search on the Scopus database. The screening process and the application of inclusion criteria led to the selection of 31 studies identified through database search and citation tracking. The included studies considered healthy and clinical populations across different age groups and employed heterogeneous instruments to assess executive functions and financial behaviors. The findings highlight a frequent association between efficient executive functioning and the quality of financial decisions. Working memory emerged as the most involved executive function, particularly in risky decision-making tasks and in the management of complex financial information. Inhibitory control appears to be associated with impulsivity regulation and decision-making biases, whereas cognitive flexibility is linked to strategic adaptation and risk evaluation. Some studies also suggest a possible bidirectional relationship, as financial stress or scarcity may reduce available cognitive resources. Overall, the literature supports the hypothesis that executive functions represent a relevant cognitive infrastructure underlying financial decision-making processes. However, the methodological heterogeneity of the studies and the predominance of cross-sectional designs limit the possibility of drawing definitive causal conclusions.en_UK
