| it_IT |
| dc.description.abstract | This thesis examines the Berlin Wall as one of the most significant symbols of the Cold War and of the division of Europe in the post-war period. Built in 1961 and demolished in 1989, the Wall was not merely a physical barrier, but the concrete manifestation of the confrontation between two opposing political, economic, and ideological systems. Through an analysis of the international context, the Berlin Crisis, and the internal dynamics of the German Democratic Republic, this study reconstructs the causes that led to the construction of the Wall and explores its main functions. The research highlights how the Wall simultaneously served as an instrument of internal political control and as a factor contributing to the stabilization of the European balance of power during the most intense phase of the Cold War. Particular attention is devoted to its ambivalent nature: on the one hand, it symbolized the restriction of individual freedoms and the authoritarian character of East Germany; on the other hand, it helped reduce the risk of a direct confrontation between the two superpowers. The thesis also examines the consequences of the division on the daily lives of Berlin’s inhabitants and the symbolic significance acquired by the Wall as an ideological frontier between East and West. Finally, the study analyzes the factors that led to its fall in 1989, interpreting it as the result of a broader process of political and international transformation that contributed to the end of the bipolar system. More than thirty years after its collapse, the Berlin Wall remains a central element of European collective memory and a key lens through which to understand the dynamics of the Cold War and the relationship between security, freedom, and political power. | en_UK |
