Quality Assurance e Test Automation in un contesto Agile: L’esperienza in WyScout

Abstract

L’ultimo decennio ha segnato per lo sport professionistico l’inizio di una rivoluzione, la transizione dall’intuizione soggettiva dei talent scout a un approccio data-driven. In questo panorama lo Sports Tech non è più solo un supporto accessorio, ma il cuore pulsante delle decisioni strategiche di club e federazioni. È in questo solido contesto tecnologico che si inserisce l'attività di Wyscout, eccellenza nata a Chiavari e oggi parte integrante del colosso statunitense Hudl, leader globale nell'analisi video e statistica.

Il presente lavoro di tesi documenta l'esperienza di tirocinio svolta all'interno della Squad PathFinders, un team multidisciplinare focalizzato su una sfida ingegneristica di alto profilo, l’integrazione di funzionalità chiave dell’ecosistema Wyscout. L'obiettivo centrale è stato lo sviluppo e la validazione della feature "Recruitment Lists", uno strumento critico per i direttori sportivi di tutto il mondo per la gestione e lo scouting dei talenti.

In un ambiente così complesso e distribuito globalmente, il ruolo del Quality Assurance (QA) Engineer emerge come fondamentale. Lontano dall'essere una semplice fase di revisione finale, la qualità viene qui intesa come un processo proattivo e integrato in ogni fase del ciclo di vita del software. Attraverso l'adozione della metodologia Agile Scrum, il lavoro si è concentrato sull'implementazione di strategie di test rigorose, spaziando dalla pianificazione manuale su Xray all'automazione moderna con Playwright.

Oltre all'approfondimento tecnico sullo stack tecnologico e sulle metodologie di testing (dalla Piramide dei Test al Regression Testing), l'elaborato riflette sul valore del contesto aziendale. L'esperienza ha permesso di scontrarsi con le sfide del mondo reale, come la gestione di incidenti in produzione e la necessità di una comunicazione trasparente, offrendo un ponte essenziale tra la teoria accademica e la pratica professionale.

The last decade has marked the beginning of a revolution for professional sports: the transition from the subjective intuition of talent scouts to a data-driven approach. In this landscape, Sports Tech is no longer just an accessory support, but the beating heart of the strategic decisions of clubs and federations. It is within this solid technological context that the activity of Wyscout is situated, an excellence born in Chiavari and today an integral part of the American giant Hudl, a global leader in video and statistical analysis.

This thesis work documents the internship experience carried out within the PathFinders Squad, a multidisciplinary team focused on a high-profile engineering challenge: the integration of key functionalities from the Wyscout ecosystem. The central objective was the development and validation of the "Recruitment Lists" feature, a critical tool for sporting directors worldwide for talent management and scouting.

In such a complex and globally distributed environment, the role of the Quality Assurance (QA) Engineer emerges as fundamental. Far from being a mere final revision phase, quality is understood here as a proactive process integrated into every stage of the software life cycle. Through the adoption of the Agile Scrum methodology, the work focused on the implementation of rigorous testing strategies, ranging from manual planning on Xray to modern automation with Playwright.

In addition to the technical in-depth analysis of the technology stack and testing methodologies (from the Test Pyramid to Regression Testing), the paper reflects on the value of the corporate context. The experience allowed for an encounter with real-world challenges, such as managing production incidents and the need for transparent communication, offering an essential bridge between academic theory and professional practice.
