La Pia, Leggenda romantica, di Bartolomeo Sestini

Abstract

Questa tesi di laurea analizza la figura e l’opera di Bartolomeo Sestini (1792-1822), poeta e patriota pistoiese, con un focus specifico sulla sua composizione più celebre: La Pia, Leggenda Romantica. Nonostante sia spesso classificato come un "autore minore" del primo Ottocento, Sestini rappresenta un’espressione significativa dei letterati patrioti del primo XIX secolo, la cui traiettoria biografica fu segnata dall'attivismo politico nella Carboneria, dalla prigionia e dall'esilio in Francia, dove morì prematuramente. Il lavoro ripercorre inizialmente la biografia del poeta, evidenziando il legame tra la sua produzione letteraria e l’impegno civile, che emerge a tratti anche in alcuni suoi testi nati dalla sua abilità di improvvisatore. Il nucleo centrale dello studio è dedicato all'analisi de La Pia, poemetto in ottave pubblicato nel 1822 che espande i pochi e misteriosi versi danteschi del Purgatorio dedicati al personaggio di Pia. Sestini rielabora la figura dantesca trasformandola in un’eroina romantica: una vittima innocente di calunnie e di un amore tormentato, destinata a una fine tragica nella desolata e malsana Maremma. Vengono inoltre approfondite le fonti e i modelli che hanno influenzato l'opera, tra i quali spiccano l'Ariosto dell'Orlando Furioso per l'intreccio narrativo e il Tasso per le descrizioni atmosferiche e il gusto per l'orrido. Un’ampia sezione è dedicata alla fortuna critica e artistica del poema nel corso del XIX secolo. La vicenda narrata all'interno dell'opera influenzò sia la pittura, la letteratura popolare (soprattutto nel caso delle ottave di Giuseppe Moroni) e soprattutto il teatro e l'opera lirica, trovando risonanza nelle tragedie di Carlo Marenco e Giacinto Bianco e Salvadore Cammarano.

In conclusione, la tesi dimostra come il lavoro di Sestini sia stato fondamentale nel canonizzare la storia di Pia come un'antica leggenda, inseritasi nell'immaginario collettivo.

This thesis analyzes the figure and work of Bartolomeo Sestini (1792-1822), a poet and patriot from Pistoia, with a specific focus on his most celebrated composition: La Pia, Leggenda Romantica. Although often classified as a "minor author" of the early 19th century, Sestini represents a significant expression of the patriotic men of letters of the eearly 19th century, whose life path was marked by political activism in the Carboneria, imprisonment, and final exile in France, where he died prematurely. The work initially retraces the poet's biography, highlighting the link between his literary production and his civil commitment, which also emerged through his skill as an improviser. The core of the study is dedicated to the analysis of La Pia, a poem in octaves published in 1822 that expands upon the few and mysterious Dantean verses from *Purgatorio* dedicated to the character of Pia. Sestini reimagines the Dantean figure as a romantic heroine: an innocent victim of slander and of a tormented love, destined for a tragic end in the desolate and unhealthy Maremma. The thesis also explores the literary sources and models that influenced the work, most notably Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso for the narrative plot and Tasso for the atmospheric descriptions and the taste for the macabre. A large section is then devoted to the poem's critical and artistic fortune throughout the 19th century; the work profoundly influenced painting, popular literature (such as the octaves by Giuseppe Moroni), and especially theater and opera, finding resonance in the tragedies of Carlo Marenco and Giacinto Bianco and Salvadore Cammarano. In conclusion, the thesis demonstrates how Sestini's work was fundamental in canonizing the story of Pia as an ancient legend, capable of embedding itself deeply within the Italian collective imagination.
