Manuele Crisolora e la rinascita degli studi greci in Occidente

Abstract

La presente tesi analizza la figura di Manuele Crisolora e il suo ruolo centrale nella rinascita degli studi greci in Occidente tra la fine del XIV e l’inizio del XV secolo. Attraverso un approccio storico-filologico, l’elaborato ricostruisce il contesto culturale in cui Crisolora operò, evidenziando il suo contributo alla diffusione della lingua e della letteratura greca nell’Europa occidentale, in particolare in Italia. Il primo capitolo è dedicato all’attività di Crisolora come maestro di lingua greca, analizzando il suo metodo di insegnamento e il ruolo svolto nella diffusione di competenze linguistiche tra gli umanisti italiani, nonché il valore della sua opera grammaticale. In questa prospettiva, viene messo in luce il ruolo fondativo di Crisolora nella formazione linguistica e culturale dell’Umanesimo, che rese possibile un accesso diretto ai testi greci e favorì un rinnovato studio della tradizione classica greca. Il secondo capitolo presenta un breve epistolario tra Manuele Crisolora e Guarino Veronese, analizzato come fonte storica e culturale utile a comprendere il dialogo intellettuale tra Oriente e Occidente e la circolazione del sapere greco nel contesto umanistico. Nel complesso, l’elaborato intende dimostrare come Manuele Crisolora sia stato una figura chiave nel ritorno degli studi greci in Occidente, non solo come mediatore culturale, ma come protagonista del rinnovamento dell’insegnamento del greco e della cultura umanistica.

his thesis examines the figure of Manuel Chrysoloras and his central role in the revival of Greek studies in the Western world between the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries. Through a historical and philological approach, the study reconstructs the cultural context in which Chrysoloras operated, highlighting his contribution to the spread of the Greek language and literature in Western Europe, particularly in Italy. The first chapter is devoted to Chrysoloras’ activity as a teacher of the Greek language, examining his methods of teaching and the role he played in the spread of linguistic competence among Italian humanists, as well as the significance of his grammatical works. From this perspective, the thesis highlights the foundational role of Chrysoloras in the linguistic and cultural formation of Humanism, which enabled direct access to Greek texts and encouraged a renewed study of the classical Greek tradition. The second chapter presents a short epistolary exchange between Manuel Chrysoloras and Guarino Veronese, analyzed as a historical and cultural source that helps to understand the intellectual dialogue between East and West and the circulation of Greek learning within the humanistic context. Overall, the thesis aims to demonstrate that Manuel Chrysoloras was a key figure in the return of Greek studies to the West, not only as a cultural mediator, but as a central figure in the renewal of Greek teaching and humanistic culture.
