IL RUOLO DELL’INFERMIERE NEL SUPPORTO EMOZIONALE AI CARE GIVER DEI PAZIENTI CRITICI: UNA REVISIONE DI LETTERATURA.

Abstract

Background dello studio: L’ammissione di un paziente in terapia intensiva rappresenta un evento altamente stressante che coinvolge non solo il paziente, ma anche la sua famiglia, in particolare il care giver primario. In questo contesto, il supporto emozionale fornito dall’infermiere ai familiari dei pazienti critici assume un ruolo centrale nel promuovere un’assistenza realmente olistica e centrata sulla persona. Obiettivi dello studio Questa tesi si propone di analizzare, attraverso una revisione della letteratura recente (2022–2025), il ruolo dell’infermiere nel fornire supporto emozionale ai familiari dei pazienti critici, individuando le strategie più efficaci e le competenze necessarie per una pratica assistenziale centrata sulla famiglia (Family-Centered Care). Materiali e Metodi: La revisione è stata condotta secondo i modelli PICO e PEO, includendo otto studi internazionali pubblicati tra il 2022 e il 2025 e reperiti su database come PubMed. Gli studi selezionati riguardano interventi infermieristici di tipo comunicativo, informativo, ambientale e tecnologico. Risultati I risultati evidenziano che la comunicazione empatica, l’ascolto attivo, la condivisione delle informazioni e il coinvolgimento del care giver nelle decisioni cliniche riducono significativamente stress, ansia e senso di impotenza, migliorando al contempo la soddisfazione e la fiducia nei confronti dell’équipe sanitaria. L’infermiere emerge come figura chiave nella mediazione tra complessità clinica e fragilità umana, promotore di un’assistenza relazionale e partecipativa. Conclusioni La tesi sottolinea l’importanza di una formazione specifica sulle competenze comunicative ed emozionali, nonché di un’organizzazione che sostenga il b benessere sia dei familiari sia degli operatori sanitari. **Background of the Study** The admission of a patient to the intensive care unit represents a highly stressful event that involves not only the patient but also their family, particularly the primary caregiver. In this context, the emotional support provided by nurses to the families of critically ill patients plays a central role in promoting truly holistic and person-centered care.

**Objectives of the Study** This thesis aims to analyze, through a review of recent literature (2022–2025), the role of the nurse in providing emotional support to the families of critically ill patients, identifying the most effective strategies and the skills required for family-centered nursing practice (Family-Centered Care).

**Materials and Methods** The review was conducted according to the PICO and PEO models, including eight international studies published between 2022 and 2025 and retrieved from databases such as PubMed. The selected studies concern nursing interventions of communicative, informative, environmental, and technological types.

**Results** The results show that empathetic communication, active listening, information sharing, and the involvement of the caregiver in clinical decisions significantly reduce stress, anxiety, and feelings of helplessness, while improving satisfaction and trust toward the healthcare team. The nurse emerges as a key figure mediating between clinical complexity and human vulnerability, promoting relational and participatory care.

**Conclusions** The thesis highlights the importance of specific training in communication and emotional skills, as well as the need for an organizational structure that supports the well-being of both family members and healthcare professionals. Only by integrating the technical and relational dimensions is it possible to ensure a truly human and participatory model of care in intensive care settings.
