Messaggi Cifrati e Indagini Digitali: Retro-engineering del caso Zodiac nell’era dell’Intelligenza Artificiale

Abstract

La tesi analizza il rapporto tra media, crittografia e intelligenza artificiale attraverso il caso Zodiac, uno dei più celebri enigmi criminali del Novecento. Esamina come i messaggi cifrati del killer abbiano contribuito alla costruzione del suo mito mediatico e come l’IA possa offrire nuovi strumenti per la decodifica e l’interpretazione del linguaggio cifrato. Dopo un inquadramento sul true crime e sull’evoluzione dei podcast come narrazione del crimine, la ricerca applica tecniche di crittoanalisi e retro-engineering ai messaggi dello Zodiac. La parte sperimentale presenta il modello “Zodiac Cryptography Tutor”, un assistente didattico basato su IA che simula la crittografia in chiave educativa, proponendo una riflessione etica sul ruolo degli algoritmi nella costruzione della verità mediatica.

The thesis analyzes the relationship between media, cryptography, and artificial intelligence through the case of the Zodiac, one of the most famous criminal enigmas of the twentieth century. It examines how the killer’s encrypted messages contributed to the construction of his media myth and how AI can offer new tools for decoding and interpreting encrypted language. After outlining the true crime genre and the evolution of podcasts as a form of crime narration, the research applies cryptanalysis and reverse-engineering techniques to the Zodiac’s messages. The experimental section presents the model “Zodiac Cryptography Tutor,” an AI-based educational assistant that simulates cryptography for learning purposes, offering an ethical reflection on the role of algorithms in shaping media truth.
