«Buttons» di Imran Mahmood: traduzione italiana e commento alla traduzione

Abstract

Il presente elaborato costituisce la parte finale del terzo anno del corso di Teorie e tecniche della mediazione interlinguistica, presso l'Università degli Studi di Genova. Esso si pone l'obiettivo di presentare la traduzione italiana di «Buttons» di Imran Mahmood, un racconto breve pubblicato all'interno della raccolta The Perfect Crime: Around the World in 22 Murders. Un'introduzione riguardante l'autore e la sua opera (capitolo primo) precede la traduzione, la quale costituisce l'oggetto del secondo capitolo. Il testo di arrivo italiano è affiancato al testo di partenza inglese, per una lettura più scorrevole e comprensibile. Il terzo capitolo contiene il commento e l'analisi della metodologia traduttiva impiegata, facendo riferimento a tecniche e strategie elaborate da L. Venuti, L. Salmon, C. Taylor e J. Malone (le cui opere sono debitamente citate nella sezione Riferimenti). L'analisi definisce le strategie e le tecniche, nonché spiega in che modo esse sono state utilizzate all'interno della traduzione; sono inoltre presenti esempi citati direttamente dal testo originale. Infine, il capitolo quarto riassume il lavoro svolto e riflette sulle difficoltà incontrate e sui requisiti necessari per tradurre un'opera letteraria.

This written dissertation is the final part of my Bachelor’s degree in Theories and techniques of interlingual mediation (Teorie e tecniche della mediazione interlinguistica) at the University of Genoa, Italy. The dissertation aims to present the Italian translation of «Buttons» by Imran Mahmood, a short story published in the collection The Perfect Crime: Around the World in 22 Murders. A brief introduction about the author and his work (Chapter 1) precedes the translation, the focus of the second chapter. The Italian target text has been formatted with the English source text immediately beside it, to allow for a quicker and more accessible read. Chapter 3 contains a commentary and in-depth analysis of the translation methodology, referencing techniques and strategies elaborated by L. Venuti, L. Salmon, C. Taylor and J. Malone, whose works and contributions are cited in the Riferimenti section. This analysis provides definitions of these techniques and strategies, explains how they were employed, and provides examples quoted directly from the source text. Lastly, Chapter 4 summarises the entire work and reflects on the challenges and requirements needed to translate a literary work.
