Un'isola divisa: l'Irlanda tra l'eredità di un passato tumultuoso e il suo ruolo nell'Unione Europea dopo la Brexit.

Abstract

La Brexit è stato un evento senza precedenti nella storia europea, che ha avuto conseguenze mondiali . L'Irlanda si è trovata di colpo in una posizione molto singolare per vari motivi: per i suoi rapporti con l’Inghilterra nel corso della storia, per la frontiera con l'Irlanda del Nord e per la sua permanenza nell'UE. Tutto ciò ha sicuramente portato molteplici opportunità, però ,dall’altro lato, ha esposto l’Irlanda a numerosi rischi. Con questa tesi mi sono posto il compito di analizzare come è cambiato il ruolo dell'Irlanda negli scenari europei e internazionali dopo il 2016, basandomi su fattori politici, economici, culturali e diplomatici. Nell’introduzione ho parlato degli aspetti tecnici della tesi, tra cui la struttura di essa, e delle principali cause della Brexit, che si dividono in politiche ed economiche, e del risultato del referendum del 2016, concentrandomi con particolare attenzione sulle divisioni interne del Regno Unito. In seguito, nel primo capitolo, ho parlato della risposta irlandese alla Brexit: dalle discussioni interne su un eventuale "Irexit" alle misure che sono state prese per adeguarsi a tutto ciò, fino ai notevoli cambiamenti portati della Brexit, soprattutto nei campi dell’economia, dell’istruzione e della migrazione. Nel secondo capitolo ho affrontato i rapporti con l'Irlanda del Nord, basandomi sui principali eventi storici irlandesi del 20esimo secolo e valutando l’impatto che la Brexit ha avuto sul Good Friday Agreement, con il rischio di nuove divisioni o addirittura con la possibilità di una riunificazione. La nuova importanza internazionale dell'Irlanda viene esaminata nei due capitoli successivi sotto vari punti di vista: come l’hub tecnologico europeo, l'attore diplomatico più potente dell'UE e come unica voce anglofona dell'UE, il che rafforza non poco la sua autorità, ma, al tempo stesso, solleva interrogativi riguardo alla protezione del gaelico. After Brexit, Ireland suddenly found itself in a unique position for several reasons: its historical relationship with England, its border with Northern Ireland, and its membership in the EU. This all brought many opportunities, but it also exposed Ireland to various risks. With this thesis, I set myself to analyze how Ireland's role in the international arena has changed since 2016, drawing on political, economic, cultural, and diplomatic factors. In the introduction, I discussed the technical aspects of the thesis, the main causes of Brexit, which can be divided into political and economic ones, and the result of the 2016 referendum, also focusing on the internal divisions within the United Kingdom. Subsequently, in the first chapter, I discussed the Irish response to Brexit: from the internal discussions regarding the possibility of an "Irexit" to the measures taken to adapt to all of this, up to the significant changes brought about by Brexit. In the second chapter, I discussed relations with Northern Ireland, drawing on Ireland's 20th-century history and assessing the impact Brexit has had on the Good Friday Agreement, with the risk of new divisions or the possibility of reunification. Ireland's new international importance is examined in the next two chapters: as a European technology hub, as one of the EU's most powerful diplomatic actor, and as the EU's sole Anglophone voice. However, this, however, also raises questions about the protection of the Gaelic language. Finally, in the final chapter, I examined the relationship between the United Kingdom and Ireland after Brexit, which constantly oscillates between opportunities for mediation and historical divergences. The conclusions reflect on future prospects: from the strengthening of Ireland's status on the international stage, to the possibility of unification, to Dublin's influence in creating a stronger EU in the post-Brexit era.
