La rivoluzione delle fortificazioni: origini, sviluppo e declino durante l’età moderna.

Abstract

La presente tesi ricostruisce l’evoluzione delle fortificazioni militari in età moderna, analizzando le trasformazioni strutturali e strategiche che interessarono il sistema difensivo europeo tra il XV e il XIX secolo. Dopo un’introduzione dedicata al contesto storico e militare dell’Europa del Quattrocento, con particolare attenzione alla condizione delle fortificazioni tradizionali, si esamina l’origine della cosiddetta “rivoluzione della fortificazione”, sviluppatasi in Italia grazie a un insieme di fattori: la perdurante instabilità politica e militare della penisola, il ruolo centrale degli ingegneri militari e il clima culturale rinascimentale favorevole all’innovazione tecnico-scientifica. Attraverso l’analisi di fonti contemporanee – trattati, articoli, documenti tecnici – e di studi storiografici recenti, vengono illustrate le caratteristiche del nuovo sistema bastionato e le sue ricadute sull’assetto urbano. L’indagine si estende quindi al contesto europeo, con un approfondimento sulle scuole francese e olandese, emerse nel XVII secolo anche grazie all’attività di ingegneri italiani all’estero e alla diffusione dei loro scritti. Una sezione è dedicata all’evoluzione dell’artiglieria, il cui crescente impiego fin dal Quattrocento fu determinante nel superamento delle strutture difensive precedenti. L’ultimo capitolo analizza il progressivo declino delle fortificazioni bastionate, travolte dall’espansione delle strategie belliche e dall’evoluzione tecnologica ottocentesca. La tesi si conclude con un focus sulla città di Genova, il cui patrimonio fortificatorio riflette, in modo emblematico, tutte le fasi della rivoluzione analizzata.

This thesis reconstructs the evolution of military fortifications in the early modern period, analyzing the structural and strategic transformations that reshaped European defensive systems from the 15th to the 19th century. Following an introductory section on the historical and military context of 15th-century Europe, with a focus on the state of traditional fortifications, the study examines the origins of the so-called “fortification revolution,” which took root in Italy due to a combination of factors: the peninsula’s persistent political and military instability, the pivotal role of military engineers, and the Renaissance’s intellectually fertile climate. Drawing on contemporary sources—treatises, articles, technical documents—as well as recent historiographical studies, the thesis outlines the features of the new bastioned system and its impact on urban development. The analysis then extends to the broader European context, with a focus on the French and Dutch schools, which emerged in the 17th century partly through the employment of Italian engineers by foreign rulers and the widespread circulation of their publications. A dedicated section explores the evolution of artillery, whose increasing use since the 15th century played a key role in rendering older defensive structures obsolete. The final chapter addresses the gradual decline of bastioned fortifications, which were eventually overtaken by the expansion of warfare strategies and the technological innovations of the 19th century. The study concludes with a focus on the city of Genoa, whose fortification heritage clearly reflects all the major phases of the revolution examined in this thesis.
