La rottura dei legami: il nuovo rapporto del Regno Unito con l'Europa dopo la Brexit

Abstract

La presente tesi analizza il fenomeno della Brexit come esito di un processo storico, politico e sociale di lunga durata. Il primo capitolo approfondisce le radici dell’euroscetticismo britannico, evidenziando il ruolo dei media e della retorica politica nell’esprimere il crescente malcontento popolare verso l’Unione Europea. Si analizzano le dinamiche interne al Partito Conservatore, l’ascesa dello UKIP e le pressioni che hanno condotto al referendum del 2016. Vengono esaminate la contrapposizione tra le campagne «Leave» e «Remain», il comportamento elettorale e l’impatto della disinformazione pre e post referendum. Il secondo capitolo esamina le sfide emerse nei negoziati tra Regno Unito e UE: dall’attivazione dell’Articolo 50 fino all’Accordo di Recesso, con particolare attenzione al Protocollo sull’Irlanda del Nord e alle crisi politiche interne che hanno accompagnato il processo. Il terzo capitolo si concentra sulle conseguenze a lungo termine: il riassestamento istituzionale dell’UE, le conseguenti ricadute sull’identità europea e la ridefinizione del ruolo globale del Regno Unito. In conclusione, la Brexit rappresenta un punto di svolta epocale nel rapporto tra sovranità nazionale e integrazione europea, con effetti ancora in pieno sviluppo non solo per il Regno Unito e l’Unione Europea, ma per l’intero equilibrio internazionale.

This thesis analyzes the phenomenon of Brexit as the result of a long-term historical, political and social process. The first chapter delves into the roots of British euroscepticism, highlighting the role of the media and political rhetoric in expressing growing popular discontent with the European Union. It analyses the internal dynamics of the Conservative Party, the rise of UKIP and the pressures that led to the 2016 referendum. The contrast between «Leave» and «Remain» campaigns, electoral behaviour and the impact of pre- and post-referendum disinformation are examined. The second chapter examines the challenges that have emerged in the negotiations between the UK and the EU: from the activation of Article 50 to the Withdrawal Agreement, with a particular focus on the Northern Ireland Protocol and the internal political crises that accompanied the process. The third chapter focuses on the long-term consequences: the institutional readjustment of the EU, the consequent repercussions on the European identity and the redefinition of the global role of the UK. In conclusion, Brexit represents a turning point in the relationship between national sovereignty and European integration, with effects still developing not only for the UK and the European Union, but for the entire international balance.
