Women in the orchestra: chasing a dream, challenging prejudice

Abstract

Qual è il ruolo di una donna all’interno di un ambiente lavorativo artistico prevalentemente dominato da figure maschili, come quello della direzione d’orchestra? Dal passato ai giorni d’oggi, si ripercorrono le tappe che hanno reso possibile alle donne di perseguire questa carriera, ma anche gli ostacoli imposti dalla società che le hanno penalizzate a causa del loro genere e delle implicazioni associate ad esso. La prima parte della tesi è introdotta da alcune riflessioni sociologiche che evidenziano le conseguenze dell’attribuzione di specifiche caratteristiche al genere sia femminile che maschile e come questo fattore abbia delineato i confini riscontrati dalle donne anche in ambito musicale. Successivamente, si ripercorrono le tappe che hanno portato alla nascita della direzione d’orchestra per come è conosciuta oggi. In questo contesto è possibile notare quali sono i tratti attribuiti alla figura del direttore d’orchestra, lontani da essere considerati femminili e quindi la principale causa di inaccessibilità da parte delle donne nei confronti di questa professione. Per concludere, attraverso l’analisi di alcuni dati, si rivolge uno sguardo al coinvolgimento di esse all’interno delle orchestre e delle stagioni teatrali in anni più recenti. Nonostante sia possibile notare come la situazione sia evoluta positivamente nel corso della storia, la donna rappresenta ancora oggi una minoranza. In questa circostanza, si riflette sul ruolo dei mezzi di informazione, i quali potrebbero contribuire a migliorare il quadro attraverso una narrazione capace di modellare l’immaginario comune abbandonando il racconto che vede la donna sul podio come un’eccezione. Dunque, grazie a questa lettura è possibile osservare come la donna sia riuscita a farsi riconoscere all’interno dell’ambito musicale, con un approfondimento sulla direzione d’orchestra.

What is the role of a female in a predominantly male-dominated artistic field such as orchestral conducting? From the past to nowadays, this thesis traces the key points that have allowed women to pursue this career, but also the obstacles imposed by society that penalised them because of their gender and the implications associated with it. The first part of the thesis is introduced by some sociological observations that highlight the consequences of attributing specific characteristics to both the female and male genders and how this has shaped the boundaries faced by women in the music industry. Next, we look at the steps that have led to the birth of orchestral conducting as it is known today. In this context, it is possible to notice the characteristics attributed to the figure of the conductor, which are far from being considered feminine, and therefore the main cause of women's inaccessibility to this professional field. Finally, through the analysis of some data, attention is turned to the involvement of women in orchestras and theatre seasons in recent years. Although it is possible to see how the situation has evolved positively over the course of history, women still represent a minority today. In this circumstance, it is worth reflecting on the role of the media, which could contribute to improving the picture through a narrative capable of shaping the common imagination by abandoning the story that sees women on the podium as an exception. Thanks to this essay, it is possible to observe how women have managed to gain recognition in the world of music, with a focus on conducting.
