Come il cinema di Hollywood ha ritratto il mondo delle spie durante la guerra fredda

Abstract

L’elaborato analizza il ruolo e l’immagine dell’agente segreto cinematografico di Hollywood nel contesto della guerra fredda. Considerato una forma d’arte, di intrattenimento, di evasione e di comunicazione di massa, il cinema è anche uno strumento di propaganda che ha posto le basi per una “guerra fredda cinematografica”, fondata sullo scontro globale per la conquista dei cuori e delle menti delle persone in tutto il mondo. Sia gli Stati Uniti che l’Unione Sovietica si sono cimentati in esso, in cui i primi sono riusciti ad avere un netto vantaggio. Il cinema di Hollywood ha prodotto numerosi film in cui i “buoni”, gli Stati Uniti, combattono contro i “cattivi” per la difesa della libertà e della democrazia. Queste pellicole sono ambientate anche in località esotiche, quali il Vietnam, la Corea, Cuba, l’Iran… Risultano da una combinazione tra realtà e finzione e costituiscono uno scorcio di enorme interesse sul mondo delle spie, usate da Hollywood per dipingere il nemico. La figura della spia è associata ad alcuni stereotipi caratteriali, fisici, culturali e di genere. Si possono cogliere anche alcune differenze tra spie di nazionalità diversa, dall’algida spia sovietica, all’energico agente statunitense, passando per la sofisticata spia britannica. Talvolta il protagonista è un uomo comune che si ritrova risucchiato nel mondo dello spionaggio, altre volte è un agente segreto o un ufficiale impegnato in complesse missioni e che può contare su una vasta gamma di strumenti tecnologici avanzati. Spesso si tratta di personaggi affascinanti che non si fanno scrupoli a uccidere, passando da una missione all’altra. Si sono sviluppati nel tempo diversi filoni spionistici: alcuni privilegiano l’immagine iconica di James Bond, la spia per eccellenza, pur non costituendo un prodotto hollywoodiano; altri prediligono una spia più avventurosa; in altri ancora, ci si focalizza sull’aspetto personale e morale della spia, più “intellettuale” e disillusa.

The thesis aims to analyse the role and image of the Hollywood cinematic secret agent during the Cold War, when both the United States and the Soviet Union used the weapon of the moving picture. Conventionally considered a form of art, entertainment, escape and mass communication, the cinema also constitutes a propaganda tool laying the foundations for a "cinematic cold war", based on the global clash to conquer the hearts and minds of people around the world, and therefore to shape national and global public opinion. In this "seventh art" the United States managed to have a clear advantage. Over the decades, Hollywood cinema has produced numerous films in which the "good guys", the United States, fight against the "bad guys" in the name of freedom and democracy. These films are also set in exotic locations, such as Vietnam, Korea, Cuba, Iran... They result from a combination of reality and fiction and constitute an interesting glimpse into the world of spies, used by Hollywood to portray the enemy. The spy is usually associated to many stereotypes, which may concern character, physical, cultural and gender elements. There are also some differences between spies of different nationalities, from the icy Soviet spy to the energetic US agent, passing through the sophisticated British spy. Sometimes the main character is a common man who gets sucked into the world of espionage, other times he is a secret agent or an officer engaged in complex missions, and who can count on a wide range of advanced technological tools. These characters are fascinating, not afraid of killing, moving from one mission to another. Over time various espionage genres have been developed: some of them are based on the iconic image of James Bond, despite it is not an Hollywood spy; others prefer a more adventurous spy; other genres focus on the personal and moral aspect of the spy, who appears as "intellectual" and disillusioned with the authorities.
