Lo sviluppo urbano di Genova nel Medioevo: studi e casi esemplari.

Abstract

A causa delle numerose stratificazioni artistiche e architettoniche, materiali e percettive, ricostruire l’aspetto della città di Genova nel medioevo può risultare un’operazione piuttosto complessa. Tuttavia, la tesi in questione vuole cercare di restituire, per quanto possibile, l’immagine di Genova dall’alto medioevo alla fine del XV secolo. Il secondo obiettivo di questa tesi è quello di mettere in evidenza come discipline differenti, nonostante la diversità degli studi e dei metodi, concorrano alla ricerca di una chiave interpretativa univoca. La città di Genova viene quindi analizzata attraverso lo studio archeologico, documentario, letterario ed artistico. In ultima analisi, la stessa prospettiva viene applicata ad un edificio centrale nella storia della città e del suo sviluppo urbano: la cattedrale di San Lorenzo.

Due to the numerous artistic and architectural, material and perceptive stratifications, reconstructing the appearance of the city of Genoa in the Middle Ages can be a rather complex operation. However, the thesis in question seeks to return, as far as possible, the image of Genoa from the high Middle Ages at the end of the fifteenth century. The second objective of this thesis is to highlight how different disciplines, despite the diversity of studies and methods, contribute to the search for a unique interpretative key. The city of Genoa is then analyzed through archaeological, documentary, literary and artistic studies. Ultimately, the same perspective is applied to a building central to the history of the city and its urban development: the cathedral of San Lorenzo.
