The emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) is the tallest and heaviest of all living penguin species and is endemic to Antarctica. This museum specimen (MNA 9151) was collected dead at Cape Washington, an ASPA Site (Antarctic Special Protected Area), in the late ’80s. The site is now comprised in the largest marine protected area (1.55 million km2) of the Ross Sea, which is managed by the CCAMLR (Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources). This Aptenodytes forsteri chick is covered with the typical silver-grey down feathers and has a black head and white mask. The chick is about 50 cm tall.
