La traduzione dell’Andria di Terenzio di Giovanni Giustiniani da Candia

Abstract

La tesi si propone l’obiettivo di indagare la vita e l’opera di Giovanni Giustiniani da Candia, letterato di origine cretese, che visse errando tra le sponde del mediterraneo latino nel primo Cinquecento. Il lavoro è incentrato sulla traduzione che il Giustiniani preparò dell’Andria di Terenzio ed è organizzato in tre sezioni. La prima, suddivisa in due capitoli, si focalizza sul dramma latino in riferimento alla fortuna della pièce e alla tradizione testuale, suggerendo alcune ipotesi sulla base delle quali sarebbe possibile identificare il ramo dello stemma da cui deriverebbe il testo tradotto dal Giustiniani; successivamente, si analizzano la biografia e l’opera tutta del Candiotto. La seconda parte prende in esame i testimoni a stampa e manoscritti che riportano il testo della traduzione; la terza è dedicata allo studio del testo, sinora inedito, del quale si propone l’edizione critica, completa di apparato e commento. Seguono alcune appendici per l’approfondimento di specifici aspetti bio-bibliografici e testuali.

This study aims to investigate the life and work of Giovanni Giustiniani of Candia, writer who lived in the early 16th century; born in Crete, he wandered between the latin Mediterranean coasts. The present work focuses on his translation of Terence’s Andria and it is divided in three different sections. The first one, made my two chapters, examines the latin play: in particular, it presents the fortune of the text and its tradition throughout the centuries, suggesting some ideas about the branch the translated text came from; then, it analyzes his biography and his complete works. The second one lists and studies in the deep the printed edition and the manuscript of the translation; the last one is about Andria itself: the text, hitherto unpublished, is here critically edited with a commentary. Lastly, follow some attachments to get a deeper knowledge of some biographical and textual aspects.
