The main objective is to compare these solutions from technical, energy, economic, environmental, and safety perspectives, in order to identify useful criteria for selecting the most appropriate refrigeration system according to the application and plant size. The topic is especially relevant in the current transition toward refrigerants with lower environmental impact and in the renewed use of natural fluids characterized by zero ozone depletion potential and very low global warming potential. The first part of the work recalls the basic principles of the vapor-compression refrigeration cycle and describes the operation of ammonia systems, focusing on the four main stages of compression, condensation, expansion, and evaporation. Ammonia is considered because of its favorable thermodynamic properties and its ability to provide high energy efficiency in many industrial applications. At the same time, the analysis also considers the safety issues associated with its toxicity and the consequent need for suitable plant design, monitoring, and protection measures. Carbon dioxide refrigeration is then examined, with particular attention to its high operating pressures and to the distinction between subcritical and transcortical operation. When the system operates above the critical temperature of CO₂, heat rejection takes place in a gas cooler rather than through conventional condensation. This operating condition can significantly influence the coefficient of performance, especially at high ambient temperatures. The study therefore highlights how climatic conditions and system configuration can affect the energy performance of CO₂ installations. The thesis also considers the CO₂–NH₃ cascade system, which consists of two separate refrigeration cycles connected through
