The research analyses how the rejection of the live-action remake Snow White (2025) is articulated in the comments on the two official Italian trailers published on YouTube, through both quantitative and qualitative content analysis. The corpus consists of 1773 comments, analysed through seven thematic categories. These identify, on the one hand, the main changes made to the story and to the representation of its characters, from Snow White’s skin colour (CRE) to the relationship between beauty (BRF) and female empowerment (E), and the representation of the dwarfs (QN); and, on the other, the ways in which users interpret these changes, particularly through discourses on wokeness (WCP), commercial opportunism (DIC), and nostalgia (NR).
An additional cross-cutting category focuses on negative modes of expression (HLO), understood as forms of participation in the conversation characterised by hostility and sarcasm.
The categories were cross-tabulated with a sentiment scale, ranging from very negative to very positive, in order to observe how the different dimensions of the discourse are associated with users’ evaluations.
The study therefore analyses how discourses on the changes in the remake, the interpretations attributed to those changes, the tone of the comments, and the evaluations expressed on the trailer intertwine, revealing the different forms that dissent takes.
Overall, the findings show that the rejection of Snow White cannot be attributed to a single motivation, but is built through the intersection of multiple themes. The case therefore shows how a contemporary product, especially when it is a remake, is embedded in a plurality of discourses, and how the conversation surrounding a film can be considered part of its reception itself, acting as a paratext through which the meaning of the work is continuously negotiated.
