For centuries, play has been recognised as an essential tool for children’s growth and learning: recent academic research has led to the development of this approach in the teaching of mathematics as well. Furthermore, in mathematics teaching and in particular in mathematical discussion, the teacher takes on roles that guide the class in developing critical and logical thinking: it is therefore important for the teacher to engage in metacognitive reflection on their own classroom behaviour with the aim of improving the support they provide to pupils.
This thesis describes an experiment, carried out in an Italian Year 5 primary school class, based on the use of games in mathematics teaching: it outlines the rules of the games, the adaptations made to suit the classroom context, and the associated learning objectives. To this end, the choice of the mathematical discussion methodology is explained: this helps pupils to discuss and consolidate their game strategies and the related mathematical concepts, whilst enabling the teacher to identify what pupils have learnt and what they are still developing. Furthermore, this methodology allows pupils to practise developing logical thinking about their own actions and the ability to articulate this verbally. Finally, a reflection is offered on the roles assumed by the teacher and on the challenges or strengths that emerged during the various stages of the planning process, with reference to the M-CACE model.
Analysis of the data collected shows that the game made learning less strenuous and more engaging; the discussion enabled pupils to compare the strategies used and assess their effectiveness; and the analysis of the teacher’s role highlighted the moments that supported the pupils in gaining awareness, as well as those areas requiring improvement.
