Abstract

Audiovisual material, such as films and TV series, serves not merely as a source of entertainment but also triggers complex psychological processes in the viewer, including emotional regulation, Theory of Mind, and empathy. Furthermore, during and sometimes even after viewing, the process of identification with characters may occur, which is crucial for understanding the various effects such material has on the audience. In this regard, the medium and the themes it portrays can have widely varying consequences: on the one hand, they may pose potential risks to the individual, while on the other, they can serve as a valuable tool for therapeutic work. However, what truly drives change in the viewer is not simply exposure to the work itself, but rather the way specific topics are depicted, the manner in which the content is consumed, and how the individual subsequently processes what they have observed.
