This thesis examines the concept of human self-formation that emerges in Goethe’s Faust. The analysis focuses on the category of Streben, which, in Goethe’s work, manifests as a tension towards the infinite throughout human existence. To this end, Gadamerian hermeneutics is adopted as a heuristic device for understanding the subjective and historical dimensions within which human self-formation takes place. The study thus identifies the pedagogical perspective underpinning the research’s epistemic framework, leading to a view of Faust’s journey as an authentic Wanderung of Bildung — that is, the journey of subjective self-formation through life experience — wherein error and steady searching become stages in the individual growth throughout their existence.
