Abstract

This thesis investigates the moral responsibility of the writer in the representation and dissemination of truth, taking as its starting point the contemporary crisis in the relationship between facts, interpretation, and language. The Orwellian expression “The disappearance of objective truth” encapsulates the central problem from which the research proceeds: how can a writer bear witness to and communicate reality without claiming to represent it from a completely neutral standpoint, while at the same time avoiding its surrender to arbitrary relativism? Through an interdisciplinary approach that brings philosophy, communication ethics, and literature into dialogue, the thesis first outlines a theoretical framework for examining the relationship between truth, memory, discourse, and power, drawing on McIntyre, Ricoeur, Foucault, Habermas, Arendt, and Derrida. On this basis, it analyses the works of George Orwell, Albert Camus, and Primo Levi, in which the responsibility of writing takes different forms: resistance to the falsification of facts and the manipulation of language in Orwell; fidelity to reality, lucidity, and measure in Camus; testimony, precision, and the preservation of memory in Levi. The research argues that, for all three authors, truth is not a definitive possession, but rather a task that requires constant vigilance over the forms through which reality is represented. Responsibility, however, does not concern the author alone: the analysis of editorial relationships and publication histories shows how the transmission of the written word also depends on those who enable its circulation, translation, and preservation, thereby contributing to the transition from individual memory to public memory.
